Into the Light

July 21, 2018 | Featured Photo

I just came back from a trip to Germany. Among other sightseeing trips, we visited Bad Soden-Salmünster. This town offers a wellness bath, which is very nice and worth a visit, a graduation tower (occasionally referred to as a thorn house), and many other things making it worth your while.

I have always been fascinated by these graduation towers. These structures are used in the production of salt. It removes the water from the saline solution and increases the concentration of mineral salts. The graduation tower consists of a wooden frame structure filled with bundles of brushwood, most often blackthorn. You can find graduation towers in spa towns, primarily in Germany, but also Austria and Poland.

The photo in the header shows such a tower. I was walking through it and making some images when the woman walked in front of me. Images inside this kind of structure tend to have an alien like vibe to them. Below are more photos from this graduation tower.
