Bald Red Cardinal
August 30, 2019 ~ in Weekly Photo/s
Red Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are relatively large, long-tailed songbirds with a short, thick bill and a prominent crest. The males are typically vibrant red. This fellow here doesn’t quite look as sharp as some of his mates. He is bald. I learned that this can happen, usually with males, and doesn’t have to mean that they are sick. This one does look a bit ruffled.
This guy visited my balcony quite often during the summer.
